The LAGOOS project was prepresented in Athens by Principal investigator William M. Barton. William presented a paper on “Cultural” Philhellenism in 19th-century Paris: The Correspondence of Georges Theocharopoulos and Charles-Benoît Hase.
The broad strokes of Hase’s support for Theocharopoulos within the Parisian literary landscape have already drawn the attention of severall historians of philhellenism. Now, on the basis of Theocharopoulos’ letters to Hase, preserved in Paris and Weimar, this paper aims to put further ‘flesh on the bones’ of this philhellenism in action within publishing, literary culture and the arts.
