William Barton presented the latest results from the ΛΑΓΩΟΣ project in Vienna as part of the Austrian Byzantine Society’s (ÖBG’s) lecture series on the 29th January 2024.

William first gave an overview of Hase’s life and work, along with an introduction to the story of his “secret” Greek diaries. The presentation then continued with a selection of the latest results from the project‘s ongoing work, including reflection on the question of Hase’s use of Greek, the project’s use of the AI tool TRANSKRIBUS to unlock the text of diaries, and Hase’s role as a cultural mediator in philhellenic Paris.

[Bright winter weather complemented the project’s rewarding visit to the ÖBG in Vienna.]
