LAGOOS Guest Lecture – Prof. Baukje van den Berg, Central European University (CEU)

The LAGOOS project is delighted to have had the opportunity to welcome Professor Baukje van den Berg, Central European University (CEU) for a guest lecture in Innsbruck. An expert in Byzantine education and literary thought, Prof. van den Berg’s spoke to us on “Ancient Texts and their Byzantine Readers: Byzantine Reflections on the Value of Literature” 19th November 2024.

The lecture explored the value attributed to ancient literature by Byzantine scholars active between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries. These scholars assumed a line of continuity between the Greek literature of the pagan past and that of later Christian times, which allowed them to position and understand ancient Greek literature within their own contemporary textual culture.

The LAGOOS team would like to thank Baukje for making the trip to Innsbruck, the Unviersity of Innsbruck’s Institute for Classical Philology and Neo-Latin Studies for hosting the event, and our own Lev Shadrin for putting the project event together.
