LAGOOS at the 3rd International Late-Antique and Byzantine Studies Conference

The 16th and 17th of May 2025 saw the third edition of the International Late Antique and Byzantine Studies Graduate Conference organised by the Late Antique and Byzantine Student Colloquium (LABS) between the Central European University and the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies, University of Vienna.

The theme of this year’s meeting was “Receiving Byzantium, Byzantium Receiving”, which aimed at Byzantium’s dual role as both a recipient and a transmitter of cultural influences as Byzantine culture both engaged with the classical traditions it inherited and interacted with its neighboring traditions.

From the LAGOOS project, two contributions were foreseen for the event: Mariia Hrynevych’s paper on “The History of Reception of the Fragments of Toparcha Gothicus by Karl Benedikt Hase (1780-1864)”, and a keynote lecture from William M. Barton with the title “Between Ancient and Modern Greek: Karl Benedikt Hase and Byzantine Studies in 19th-century Paris”.
