A Life in Ancient Greek: The Secret Diary of Karl Benedikt Hase (1780–1864)

A project dedicated to the edition and study of Karl Benedikt Hase’s ‘Secret’ diary, funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and hosted by the University of Innsbruck

Zoom Lecture for the Antibarbari Greco-Latin Club

On 9th October 2025, LAGOOS team member Lev Shadrin delivered a lecture on Hase’s diaries for the Antibarbari academic community “colloquia” series at the Higher School of Economics. The lecture contextualized Hase’s scholarly pursuits and his diary-writing practices within the broader framework of 19th-century debates on the purity of the Greek language. Lev presented an overview of the LAGOOS digital infrastructure, outlining the use of Transkribus HTR for automated text extraction, and describing custom NLP solutions that facilitate distant reading and linguistic analysis.

The lecture featured a selection of philological curiosities from the diary entries, which offer a glimpse into Parisian academic life in the 19th century, and illustrate the unique fusion of historical registers of Greek typical for Hase’s private writing style.

The recording of the lecture (in Russian) is available here: https://vkvideo.ru/video-211800158_456239481
