A Life in Ancient Greek: The Secret Diary of Karl Benedikt Hase (1780–1864)

A project dedicated to the edition and study of Karl Benedikt Hase’s ‘Secret’ diary, funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and hosted by the University of Innsbruck

The LAGOOS team is made of four researchers based at the University of Innsbruck.

William M. Barton

Principal Investigator (PI)

William studied Classical Philology in Britain and Canada before specialising in Neo-Latin and Neo-Ancient Greek during his doctoral and post-doctoral work. William won the FWF START Prize in June 2022

Mariia Hrynevych

Doctoral Research Assistant

Mariia obtained her MA degree in Classical Philology, Literary Studies, and English from Kharkiv National University. As part of the LAGOOS team she is responsible for creating the regesta of Hase’s diaries and investigating how his works and intellectual legacy were received and influenced subsequent scholarly thought.

Lev Shadrin

Doctoral Research Assistant

With a BA in Art History, and Master’s degrees in Medieval Studies and Digital Humanities, Lev focuses on transcribing Hase’s diary, training Transkribus HTR models, and implementing NLP tools and programs to analyse linguistic aspects of the text.

Chiara Telesca

Postdoctoral Researcher

Chiara studied Greek and Latin at the University of Basilicata (Italy), where she earned her PhD in Classical Philology. She specializes in Late Antique and Byzantine rhetoric, as well as the history of Classical scholarship. As a member of the Lagoos project, she is responsible for annotating and ‘tagging’ Hase’s diary while investigating his scholarly networks and his broader impact on the 19th-century Greek scholarship.
